In any circumstances that if you cannot ping a Windows host from a Linux box by the hostname, but you can do this in the reverse direction (Windows ping Linux), this may be due to the NetBIOS problem.
Windows by default can resolve through NetBIOS, but not the same case in Linux. This article shows you how to install a WINS server and resolve hostnames with it.
