林肯在任內使用ballot和bullet來作為文明與暴力的對比的名句還有很多，例如：

"That ballots are the rightful,
and peaceful, successors of bullets; and that when ballots have
fairly, and constitutionally, decided, there can be no successful
appeal, back to bullets?"
